MUSKY FISHING TIPS
The Musky is not the fish of 10,000 casts! You can greatly increase your odds in catching Muskies by fishing waters with good populations of Muskies, fishing key locations within the body of water you are fishing, and by offering the proper presentation for the area you are fishing.

Always fish with sharp hooks! Muskies have tough and bony mouths. Razor sharp hooks are essential for landing these freshwater trophies. Purchase lures with factory sharp hooks when possible. Just because a lure is new does not mean it has sharp hooks. Keep a hook hone/file in your tackle box when fishing Musky and always check the sharpness of your hooks while fishing.
Catch Photo & Release (CPR) fishing for Muskies is vital for the future of the sport. Muskies take 15+ years to grow into trophy size fish. When you catch a trophy Musky minimize all handling of the fish. If you net the fish, don't lift the fish into the boat - keep it in the water and remove the hooks. Be careful when removing the hooks - at any time the Musky could thrash and impale the sharp hooks into your hands. After removing the hooks, if you wish to take pictures of your catch, take them quickly while holding the Musky firmly so it will not fall from your hands. Gently place the fish back into the water so the fish is in a natural swimming position and release when the fish begins to swim. For more tips on handling & releasing Muskies click here.
If you choose to mount your trophy Musky, consider releasing the fish to grow and fight another day and get a reproduction mount made. Before you release your trophy fish, take several pictures and accurately measure and record the length and girth of the fish. This will help your taxidermist recreate your trophy. If you are curious about the weight of your fish, try plugging your fishes measurements into this catch & release weight calculator.
Check the moon before you go fishing. Some people swear Muskyies are more active around these lunar and solunar phases. Does it work? Try it out for yourself and you decide. Visit these links for more info: The Real Scoop On Moon Phases & Sun and Moon Charts.
